Consumer Credit Counseling

Question: >Perhaps you just had the bad luck to get a poor counsellor. I got some >advice once from a similar organisation, and the budget process was a kind >of negotiation – ‘How much do you spend on X?’ followed by agreement, or a >tactful, ‘A lot of people spend more, maybe about as much as Y’ followed >by discussion until we reached agreement on figure. I don’t think that >they recommended bankruptcy except as an absolute last resort.

Answer: Ah, Cheryl, I wish we had known that. I wish we had known alot of things…LOL, famous “if I knew then what I know now….” life would be very different, I think…I know my debt was bad, but mostly what we had was alot of med bills due to my having 3 emergency surgeries in 6 months time frame. Now THAT is bad luck:( None of the agencies particularly wanted to work with me. In fact, one of the med bills went to collection. I sent the collection agency a check for $50.00 thinking it would at least look like I was *attempting* to pay the thing, and the lady sent my check back saying it was not enough or acceptable. I was more than surprised! It didnt take me long to realize that it isnt who you are, what you are, how much money you have that makes collection agencies work with you. Its about whether that account handler is having a good day or not! *sheesh*! Have you considered trying CCC again? I mean, if the problem was just a bad conselor, try for a better one. The organization has a good reputation among people who have no financial interest in promoting them, but every organization has good and bad people.

On the other hand – I don’t like the increasing trend toward personal bankruptcies, but sometimes there really is no other alternative. Are you sure you are being realistic about your finances? It sounds like you are continuing to rack up debt – if so, you are probably going to be forced into bankruptcy eventually and the longer you wait, the more people will end up with your bad debt. You need to find someone objective to assess your financial situation right now and either help you get started down the road to recovery or to at least stop the mess before it gets worse.
