Answer: My “efficient way out” was to declare bankruptcy, which is not a good solution for everybody. In my case, I didn’t know where my next paycheck was coming from, and I wanted to quit promising to pay people money I didn’t have.

I was discharged last spring, and right now our household (I’m now married) has terrible credit. For me, that’s a liveable consequence – I pay cash for everything, and we’re slowly rebuilding our credit via frugality and better money management, which is where this group has helped tremendously. :) Also, I’m relieved that most of our credit card debt is GONE – my “single” ones via chapter 7, our “married” ones via paying them off. (Every so often I get a credit card offer aimed at recent bankrupts; it gets circular-filed.)

Again, not a solution for everybody.
