Answer: My “efficient way out” was to declare bankruptcy, which is not a good solution for everybody. In my case, I didn’t know where my next paycheck was coming from, and I wanted to quit promising to pay people money I didn’t have.
I was discharged last spring, and right now our household (I’m now married) has terrible credit. For me, that’s a liveable consequence – I pay cash for everything, and we’re slowly rebuilding our credit via frugality and better money management, which is where this group has helped tremendously.
Also, I’m relieved that most of our credit card debt is GONE – my “single” ones via chapter 7, our “married” ones via paying them off. (Every so often I get a credit card offer aimed at recent bankrupts; it gets circular-filed.)
Again, not a solution for everybody.
