Question: I am 60. not much money. would like to keep living in Oakland but may get priced out. never have owned a home.I am married. does anybody have any ingenious ideas on how to get frugal housing, excluding housesitting.
Answer: We have a program in Oregon that my brother took advantage several years ago — something like a “Farm Home Loan.” If you chose to live outside the city limits, you could get one of the best deals toward owning your own home. The mortgage payments were actually cheaper than paying rent. They have their own listings and criteria for accepting applications — maybe there’s something like that in Oakland?
P.S. In the past 16 years, my brother was able to sell and buy a new home three times and now he even owns property on the coast!
