Answer: Hi Folks, I am exploring the idea of cashing in my 401-k from a previous employer and paying off my modest home and car. I would still have a few thousand left over to start building a new retirement nest egg all over again, plus I have 20 years left in the work force before retirement. (I will have two small pensions and another smaller 401-k savings plan by 2020.)
This would be a big step for me, but the idea of owning my home outright seems very empowering. I have the discipline to sock away a portion of my monthly salary (i.e. the amount represented by the current house payment) for retirement savings. I am intrigued by the enormous amount I would save in interest on the home loan.
I would be interested in hearing from people who have made this bold step. Thanks,
