Answer: In the U.S., it’s very difficult to get a home loan without a credit record based on card usage. Again, in the U.S., some credit card companies offer(ed) automatic doubling of warranty period for items purchased with a credit card. No additional charge and no ripoff. I believe that’s what yankee was referring to, not the purchased extensions. How can you tell if they’re honest before you buy anything from them? Weeel, again, in the U.S., a lot of banks charge for banker’s checks, and if you’re out of town and there’s no branch of your bank (quite common, as even the nationals aren’t everywhere, let alone the locals), it gets even more complicated. I think it’s a “different strokes” issue myself, and it’s going to depend a lot on your buying patterns and the options available in your country or region. I don’t like debit cards because I’m not as well-protected, in the U.S., in the event of theft, etc. as I am with credit cards. OTOH, while I don’t carry a balance on my credit cards, I can see the merit in relying on external limits to spending as well as internal ones.

I know lots of people of both financial persuasions who nonetheless seem to be making it happily through life. People deal very differently with money, and I think if you find a method that serves your needs there’s not much point in changing it just because it deviates from a perceived norm :-) .
