Answer: And when they decide to start tacking on charges, all the chit-chat in the world won’t stop them from assessing a charge each time you visit that teller. Besides, the time you spend tying up a teller in chit-chatting undoubtedly increases their costs, which they must then find a way to pass along–if not directly to you, then to *somebody*.

You still didn’t explain how Karen is being unfrugal in asking how she can avoid ATM fees charged by her credit union, which apparently is not open at convenient hours for her, and by other banks whose ATMs she must therefore use to access her own money. I also have telephone banking. In addition, I use the bank’s proprietary software for the same purposes, including bill payments. So far it’s free. I also have free checking as long as I have direct deposit. Would you not be charged a cash advance fee? My MC is from one of the very few banks that does not charge a fee for cash advances, but even it charges interest from the moment I take that advance. Most everyone else pays interest plus the fee. Most supermarkets usually charge for check cashing if you’re not buying groceries; if you are buying groceries, then you’re limited to ten or twenty dollars over the amount of purchase.
