Credit Cards: MBNA vs. Citibank vs. AT&T

Question: I’m planning to prune the number of credit cards I have, and was wondering which of the following cards is the best overall:

1. MBNA Mastercard 2. Citibank Visa 3. AT&T Univeral Mastercard

Besides the pure numerical stats on these cards (ie. annual fee, apr, etc) I’m considering other factors such as: – quality of customer service (esp. during disputes with merchants) – perks (such as insurance coverage, price protection, etc) – policy on credit limit increases (are they strict or leanient?) – any interesting features of the card

I’m kind of leaning toward getting rid of the MBNA card but I’ve read that they’re supposed to have one of the best customer service, and tend to give their cards to only to people who they feel have excellent credit records. MBNA seems to issue several different types of cards with different characteristics (ie. apr, annual fee, etc). Can anyone confirm this? The one I have must be one of their worst, because the apr is lousy (17.9%) and they charge $20 annual fee.

I like the Citibank card because it’s got my picture on it (yippie). Also, it has price protection which I don’t think the other cards have.

The AT&T card is great not only because it has no annual fee, but also because it gives you a grace period on cash advances (as long as you paid the previous month’s balance in full).

So based on the factors above, which cards should I keep and which ones should I throw away? Also, has anyone tried to have a particular credit card company raise your credit limit by promising to cancel one of your other credit cards?

Answer: Does AT&T really give a grace period on cash advances, is there a trick to it like with Discover (1.5% transaction fee).

MBNA has a 14.9% rate including a 12.9% Cash Advance rate through 12/93 and a waiver of the first years annual fee. Haven’t used the customer service enough to judge.

Citibank has excellent customer service and WILL increase your credit over the telephone within a few minutes and in one case when I needed to exceed my limit they gave me the O.K. I dislike having only a portion of my total credit line available for cash and it still being at the 19.8% rate.

If make a lot of purchases I’d recommend Citibank, If you get a lot of cash advances choose MBNA. I don’t know about AT&T
