Getting started

Question: Some people, however, would like to attain >your goal while living in a $200k house, >making $85k a year, driving a new car every >two years, and going out to the local >steakhouse a few times a week. Not likely. Not >impossible, but not likely.

This is the whole problem. I rent a room in a house for $150 a month, own 2 cars , a 1989 Dodge Caravan LE & a 1989 Honda Civic LE. Both very nice cars. And my qualiy of life is MUCH better than some friends I know who live in $200,000 homes & drive new cars. Plus, being an avid dumpster diver helps a lot.. Check out the pictures on my webpage of the things in our home… If my Boy & I want to go to the steak house a couple times a week, WE CAN AFFORD IT by not living beyond our means!!

Answer: Delurking here: As I read this thread, I too thought about debit card. I use 2 credit union visa debit cards (different accounts, for different purposes) which for all intents and purposes behave as credit cards do for the merchant, but incur no additional costs to me. They operate directly off my savings accounts. I have set up an overdraft on one of the cards (I was planning some overseas travel at the time & wanted the facility as a back up if things went wrong), which if I were to ever use it would charge interest at the rate of a personal loan, which is less than credit card interest here – can’t speak for anywhere else though. Whilst ever I don’t use the overdraft facility, I don’t pay for it either.

I also use EFTPOS facilities on my bank account where ever possible too, but they do cost a transaction fee here. if a business deals in large amounts of cash, they can expect visits or investigtion from varius agencies primary with respect to the drug issue. PAying them in large amounts of cash is at the least an inconvience for both me and them..
